Thinking of going racing? You could do a lot worse than try EMRA Roadstocks for starters. I had three very happy and relatively inexpensive seasons in the class and I can’t think of a better way to get started. If you have a quick, reliable road bike and are running in the fast group at track days, then you are just an ACU licence away from poverty, lost weekends and possibly divorce! Helps if you like (and live near to) Mallory Park though!
In 2005 I stepped up a level and ran with New Era in their Clubmans Challenge Sound of Thunder Championship. Running with a transponder and having timed practice for grid positions meant the whole thing felt a lot more professional (and fair), but a lot of the meetings were two day affairs and for me and Michele this was a big step up in terms of commitment and time. Great club if you’re serious about your racing....I wasn’t! Still highly recommended.

Last but not least you will definitely need to get in touch with the ACU. The rules on getting a race licence have changed a bit since I started, and you now have to do some sort of course before you can even get a novice licence. Check out the ACU web site using the link here..
